If you're considering a planned Caesarean section — whether for medical reasons, after a previous Caesarean, or because it's the birth you feel is right for you — Dr Tom Prior offers expert, supportive private care throughout your decision, your procedure, and your recovery.

Tom believes every woman deserves to make an informed choice about how she gives birth, free from pressure or judgement. Whether your caesarean is medically indicated or a maternal request, you'll be treated with the same expertise, respect, and care.​

Private elective Caesareans are available at the Lindo Wing, The Portland Hospital, and Queen Charlotte's Hospital.

Why choose a planned Caesarean?

There are many reasons women choose an elective caesarean, including:

• A medical or obstetric reason, such as a low-lying placenta, breech presentation, or a previous complicated birth

• A previous caesarean section

• Twins or a multiple pregnancy

• A personal preference for a planned, predictable birth — known as a "maternal request" caesarean

• Anxiety around vaginal birth, including previous birth trauma

• Wanting greater control over the timing and circumstances of your baby's arrival​

Whatever your reason, Tom will talk it through with you openly, answer your questions honestly, and support the decision that's right for you and your baby.

What to expect

Your consultation:

You'll meet Tom to discuss your pregnancy, your reasons for choosing a Caesarean, and any questions or concerns you have.

Planning your date:

Tom will agree a date with you well in advance, that is right for both you and your baby, so you can plan with confidence.

​

On the day:

Most Caesareans are performed under spinal or epidural anaesthesia, so you're awake and able to see and hold your baby right after birth. The procedure itself typically takes around 45 minutes. You'll have a dedicated team with you throughout.

​

Recovery:

You'll usually stay in hospital for one to three nights, with support from the midwifery and nursing team. Tom will see you during your recovery and remain available for any questions in the days and weeks that follow, alongside your standard postnatal care.

Frequently asked questions

Can I request a caesarean even if there isn't a medical reason?

Yes. Maternal request is a recognised reason for a planned caesarean, and Tom will discuss the benefits and risks with you so you can make the decision that's right for you.

Will my partner be able to be in theatre with me?

Yes, in almost all cases your partner or birth partner can be with you throughout the procedure.

​

How long will I be in hospital?

Most women stay for one to three nights, depending on how you and your baby are recovering.

​

Can I have skin-to-skin contact straight away?

Yes, wherever possible immediate skin-to-skin contact is supported, along with delayed cord clamping if that's important to you.

​

What if I've had a Caesarean before? Tom has extensive experience caring for women who've had a previous caesarean and will talk through your options, including the safety of a repeat Caesarean versus a vaginal birth after Caesarean (VBAC).
